Singapore Knee Preservation Society Research Scholarship 2024

With my research mentor, A/Prof Hamid Razak, at the conference! Special shoutouts to him for his mentorship and guidance in this research journey.
I am truly grateful for the generous support from the Singapore Knee Preservation Society Research Scholarship 2024. Being part of the Malaysian Arthroscopic Society (MAS) Annual Scientific Meeting 2024 as a finalist for the Azmi Abdul Latiff Award was an enriching experience. Presenting my study on “Do Monocortical Distal Locking Screws Impair Mechanical Properties in Opening Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy with Bone Graft? – A Sawbone Biomechanical Study” allowed me to showcase our research findings to a distinguished group of orthopaedic surgeons and engage in valuable discussions. This conference provided a dynamic platform to learn from experts, exchange ideas, and gain feedback on my work.
Our study tackled a significant question in the realm of knee-preserving surgical techniques. As the incidence of knee osteoarthritis rises, particularly among younger, active patients, medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) has emerged as an effective option to delay or avoid knee replacement. By investigating the comparative stability of monocortical versus bicortical distal screw fixation, we aimed to explore a potentially less invasive yet effective alternative. Our findings showed that monocortical fixation of the distal screws in MOWHTO is mechanically non-inferior to bicortical fixation in terms of compressive strength and fatigue endurance. These insights may contribute to safer and more cost-effective approaches in orthopaedic practice, with the potential to reduce symptomatic hardware issues post-operatively.
Attending MAS 2024 exposed me to a broad range of innovations and techniques in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery. Interacting with peers and experts further deepened my understanding of advancements in knee preservation and reinforced the importance of collaborative research within the orthopaedic community.
