Dr Lee Kong Hwee at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Malaysian Society for Hip and Knee Surgeons

It was a very enriching and productive week for our society with our president Dr Lee Kong Hwee sharing his knowledge and opinions on osteotomy as a knee preserving option especially in younger patients with knee osteoarthritis at the Annual Scentific Meeting of the Malaysian Society for Hip and Knee Surgeons from 4 to 6 May 2023.

A recent study by Perdisa et al published in Cartilage showed that utility of total knee arthroplasty in the middle-aged patient population up to 65 years old increased significantly over time. These patients present a double risk of failure with respect to older patients. This is particularly important considering the increasing life expectancy and the emergence of new joint preserving strategies, which could postpone the need for a total knee arthroplasty to an older age.

We are also very pleased for our younger colleagues, Dr Don Koh and Dr Teo Shao Jin who presented free papers at the meeting and did us proud by winning the top 2 free paper awards !

We would like to take the opportunity to thank the organizers (Prof Dr Azhar Merican, Dr Veenesh Selvaratnam and the entire team) for inviting us to share our work and for the wonderful hospitality!

Together, let’s make osteotomy great again!
